Creative Strategy, Brand Identity Design, Web Design
Challenge
Develop a clear visual identity, website, and logo that will attract new customers, impress possible employers, and serve to grow and expand Briggs Photography
.
I sat down with Kira and we ran through what she envisioned for her business. Who are her clients? What are the aspects of her personality that she wants to capitalize on in her work? What makes her stand out? She informed me that this website would not only serve current and future clients but also would be part of her portfolio when applying to jobs. The visual identity needed to not only represent the high quality of her work but also speak to Kira as a person.
From there I dug deeper. I had to get to know Kira so I could effectively create a brand that represents her style and personality. After understanding what she wanted for this website to do for her I had to think of what she could do for the website. I was faced with the challenge of effectively catering this brand to two audiences- employers and future clients
Strategy
Knowing the audience, I began to brainstorm ways in which I would utilize the navigation of the website to simultaneously advertise and showcase. Creating easy usability for clients to schedule sessions was of utmost importance but showcasing her work needed to be an easy and natural next step. I researched UI/UX interface design and mapped out different options to try and maximize usability.
Type
We decided on the Didiot font family. The classification is known as modern and uses dramatic variations between thick and thin strokes while still managing to maintain balance. This elegant and modern font provided the professional yet personal feel the brand was looking for without compromising readability.
Color
In our original meeting, Kira mentioned earth tones. So initially she inquired about deep hues of emerald green and orangy reds but after some deliberation, she felt those colors were too heavy and would take focus away from the photography itself. I helped her developed a lighter more airy pallet that consisted of shades of light blue, white, and black. Colors that would serve as a blank canvas to showcase her work.
Logo and slogan formation
For her logo, she wanted it to be derived from the letter in Briggs Photo. Either incorporating a B or a P (or both). I sketched up some prototypes in Indesign and presented them to her, offering logos that had readability the lettering and others that looked more symbolic. Though she was initially partial to the readability of the letters she ended up deciding on a more abstract-looking logo due to its shape and its feel.
I crafted the slogan “Compassion Behind the lens” after understanding Kiras demeanor with her clients. She told me that in photography you can get a really great picture from a photography standpoint but you don’t always “get the subject in their best light”. She always aims to photograph her subjects with compassion for how they see themselves and not just for photographic quality and that this is what makes her stand out from other photographers.
Putting it all together
From the interface design to the color pallet to the typography, I crafted a website for Biggs Photo that accurately captures Kira as a person and brings photos as a brand. The landing homepage not only has a well-designed cover page but also has a booking button that allows clients to have immediate directions to book a shoot if that is why they are on the website.
However, if the user is not a client, the instinct to scroll down on the webpage brings the users to categories and examples of Kira’s work. Outlined by category, each box, when hovered and clicked on, takes you to a separate page where packages and deals are outlined at the top. Then in the same continuous motion if the user scrolls they are met with examples of Kira’s previous work.
The webpage also includes an “About Me” page where possible employers can learn more about Kira and her business as well as a separate contact page where clients can input their information and interest for bookings that are linked to Kira’s Buisness email and phone number.
